Aluminium waterproofing membrane in Mauritius: where it actually works

Aluminium-faced membranes, whether self-adhesive bituminous rolls or sheets, are in high demand in Mauritius for their reflective finish. They genuinely help on some structures and cause trouble on others. Here is how we position them.

What the aluminium facing brings

The aluminium film reflects part of the solar radiation and shields the bitumen beneath from UV, which extends its life. On a very exposed roof, surface temperature drops compared with a black membrane.

Where it makes sense

Localised repairs, flashings and roof edges, treatment of laps on metal sheeting, gutters, valleys and plant plinths. It is an excellent local-repair product and a fast fix on metal roofs.

  • Cold-applied, flame-free, on a dry, primed substrate
  • Good behaviour on metal and on edge details
  • Fast intervention during the rainy season

The traps on large areas

Across a full concrete slab, everything depends on the laps: a poorly rolled sheet, an upstand that is too short or a dusty substrate, and water gets through. That is why we often prefer a seamless liquid membrane on complex concrete roofs.

Aluminium or liquid system?

The choice depends on substrate, geometry, access and thermal objectives. We stay brand-neutral: the selected system is written into the specification, with its warranty conditions, before any commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Is an aluminium membrane enough on a leaking concrete roof?

Sometimes, for a targeted repair. On a slab leaking in several places, the cause must be identified first: an extra lap over a saturated substrate does not solve the problem.

Does the aluminium facing replace a thermal solution?

No. It reduces solar absorption, but real comfort gains require a properly specified thermal system, often combined with the waterproofing.
